A new .si domain costs about $12 for the first year at the cheapest registrars, and anyone in the world can register one. The catch is the renewal price, which varies far more between registrars than the first-year price does. This guide covers the official rules, how to register step by step, what each registrar really charges, and what to do if the name you want is already taken.
If you're new to .si, our .si domain guide explains why the extension suddenly became popular in 2026.
What is a .si domain?
.si is the country code domain of Slovenia. It's run by Register.si, the registry operated by ARNES, Slovenia's Academic and Research Network. Register.si doesn't sell domains to the public. You buy a .si through an accredited registrar, which registers it with the registry for you. For more on the country behind the domain and who runs it, see what country is .si.
Since September 2026, ".si" has also been read as "SI", short for super intelligence. That's why AI founders and domain investors started buying .si names. Our post SI now means Super Intelligence covers that story and the risks.
Who can register a .si domain?
We checked the rules in Register.si's General terms and conditions (the version valid from 15 November 2024):
- Anyone can. A domain holder is defined as "a natural or legal person" (Article 2.7). There's no requirement to live in Slovenia, be an EU citizen or have a company there.
- Length: 2 to 63 characters (Articles 4.1 and 4.2). Two-letter names are allowed, but most short names were taken long ago.
- Characters: letters, numbers and hyphens. A name can't start or end with a hyphen, and it can't have hyphens as both its third and fourth characters (Articles 4.3 and 4.4). Slovene letters such as č, š and ž are allowed, along with other accented Latin letters.
- Reserved names: a few can't be registered, such as 112.si, 113.si, si.si and rs.si (Article 4.5).
- Term: 1 to 5 years, for both registration and renewal (Article 5.1.1). Some registrars sell fewer options; Hostinger, for example, offers 1 to 3 years.
- Privacy: if you register as a private person, only your email address is published in WHOIS (Article 13.3). Companies' details are shown in full.
How to buy a .si domain, step by step
- Pick your name. Keep it short and easy to spell, and avoid other companies' trademarks. A trademark owner can take a name from you through the registry's dispute procedure.
- Check that it's free. Type it into our .si availability checker. It asks the registry directly, so the answer is current.
- Choose a registrar. Use the price table below, and compare renewal prices, not just the first year. Register.si also publishes the full list of accredited registrars.
- Register it for 1 to 5 years. Use contact details that work, especially your email address. Register.si warns that a domain can be deleted if the registry can't reach the holder by email.
- Point it at your website. Set the nameservers or DNS records at your registrar. One thing to know: under the general terms (Article 12), consumers can withdraw within 16 days of registration, but only if the domain hasn't been activated, and adding nameservers counts as activation.
- Turn on auto-renew. It's the easiest way not to lose the name later.
.si domain price: registrars compared
We checked each registrar's own .si page on 6 October 2026. Prices are for one year, without promo codes, in the currency the registrar showed us.
| Registrar | 1st year | Renewal | Transfer | First 3 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dynadot | $12.04 | $13.51 | $0.00 | $39.06 |
| INWX | $12.75 | $13.75 | $0.00 | $40.25 |
| Hostinger | $11.99 | $16.99 | n/a | $45.97 |
| Porkbun | $20.381 | $23.702 | $0.00 | $67.78 |
| EuroDNS | €12.99 | €76.50 | €76.50 | €165.99 |
Prices checked on 6 October 2026. "First 3 years" is the first year plus two renewals at the regular price. n/a: Hostinger's .si page doesn't list a transfer price. 1 Sale price; Porkbun's regular price is $23.70. 2 On sale for $17.50 when we checked. Registrars may show prices in your local currency and add VAT, and prices change often, so confirm at checkout.
What the table shows:
- Cheapest over time: Dynadot and INWX. Their first-year prices aren't the lowest, but their renewals are the cheapest we found. Over three years, Dynadot comes out cheapest at $39.06.
- Cheapest first year: Hostinger, at $11.99. It renews at $16.99, so it costs more than Dynadot from the second year on.
- Watch for big renewal jumps. EuroDNS charges €12.99 for the first year and €76.50 a year after that. That's the most common .si price trap.
- Some registrars don't sell .si to everyone. Gandi lists .si at €90 a year, and only for customers with a Corporate Services contract.
Renewal and transfer basics
Renewing. You can renew a .si for 1 to 5 years at any time, through your registrar (Register.si).
If it expires. An unrenewed .si goes into "quarantine": the registry takes it offline, but you can still renew it. Quarantine lasts no more than 30 days. After that the domain is deleted and anyone can register it again (Articles 5.4.2 and 5.4.3). Some registrars charge extra to restore a domain at this stage; EuroDNS, for example, lists a €25 reactivation fee.
Moving to a cheaper registrar. Set an authinfo code on the domain at your current registrar, then give that code to the new registrar (Register.si). Changing registrar doesn't change the domain's expiry date (Article 6.3.3). That's why Dynadot, INWX and Porkbun charge $0 to transfer a .si in. It also means a transfer doesn't add a year, unlike a .com transfer, so renew it separately.
Changing the owner. Moving a .si to a new holder needs the agreement of both the old and the new holder, and the registrar carries it out (Article 6.4.2). The registry emails both of them when it's done. This is the step that completes a purchase from another owner.
Buying a .si domain that's already taken
If the checker says a name is registered, you can still buy it from its owner:
- Check the premium listings. We list 1,313 premium .si domains with fixed prices on our .si domains for sale page. Each Buy button goes to the seller's page, where you pay through escrow.
- Visit the domain. Parked names often show a "for sale" page or a contact form.
- Make an offer, and pay through escrow. Never send money directly to a stranger. The escrow service holds your payment until the domain is in your account.
- Check the ownership change. Once the seller moves the domain to your registrar and makes you the holder, a WHOIS lookup should show your email address (or your company's details).
Premium names cost far more than a new registration, and much of the 2026 .si market is investors selling to each other. Read the risks before you buy, and our fact check of the .si insider claims for what real .si sales look like.
